JULY 10,2010 Cornell Gardeners Will Host A FREE OF CHARGE OPEN HOUSE AT CORNELL UNIVERSITY LONG ISLAND HORTICULTURAL RESEARCH CENTER ON SOUND AVE IN RIVERHEAD.

JULY 10 2010: CORNELL GARDENERS WILL WELCOME VISITORS TO CORNELL LABS OPEN HOUSE ON SOUND AVE. GUESTS WILL ENJOY GARDEN AND HAYRIDE TOURS AS WELL AS INFROMATIVE SEMINARS AND CHILDREN ACTIVITIES. FOR ADDTIONAL INFORMATION CONTACT Ken Mohring AT  kmohring@optonline.net


Welcome to Cornell Gardeners Open House, Aug. 22, 2009.

It's Saturday morning and the weather has cleared just in time for our Open House.

The Adrian Bloom River Garden in front of the main entrance of the Lab,greets the visitor.




To the left(south) of The Adrian Bloom River Garden is a Shady Corner Garden.


 

Left,Dr. Mark Bridgen, Director of the Lab greets visitors with John, Treasurer Cornell Gardners.

Visitors are greeted and garden tours begin.

A section of The Adrian Bloom garden welcomes visitors, next stop the garden gates to Cornell L garden and Lab Display Gardens.

Visitors enter the garden gates to the main gardens, the entire 62 acres are protected by a deer fence. The deer fence protects the research projects that are conducted at the Lab.


Cornell Gardener Jane and her husband get ready to greet visitors and take them on a tour of the gardens.

The white posts and wood chip path welcomes visitors to the Cornell Gardens L Garden..The first part of the L garden is the herb garden.. 


As we leave the herb garden we take a seat at the pergola.


The wood chip path leads us from the  pargola to the bulb gardens on the left and the fragrance garden on the right.. 

Next stop is the conifer garden which rising above the wood chip path, allowing for a rest and a birdseye view of the gardens.

Looking south on the east side of the Cottage Garden.

The cottage garden reveals the tall meadow rue.

Looking east from the conifer garden at the Dahlia beds and The Lab display gardens  and the green shed roof.

Looking South west from the conifer gardens the deer fence surrounds the 62 acre Cornell Campus.

As we desend on wood chip path, from the conifer garden into the cottage garden we are quickly surrounded by mature plants.

The Dahlia's are in bloom.

Dan, the lab bug Dr. looks for insects to display for the children's workshop, late on today.

Cornell Gardener Ellie on the left answers a question about Dahlias..Notice each the dahlia in the fore grown has a label with the Dahlia name and size. Each of the over 200 Dahlias is labeled.

Looking north from The compost bin which is the end of the L gardens.

Looking north in the Lab Display Gardens are the Hibiscus in full bloom.

Looking north in the perennial display gardens we notice the labels of each plant.

In the Labs Annual Gardens looking north we notice the weed cloth, and the drip irrigation system that waters each of the over 300 varieties of annual plants.

The annuals in bloom are graded for over 50  indvidual characteristic, including color,size,beauty,drought tolerance and others. The results are compiles by Dr. Nora and returned to the individual growers and nursery's thrughout the country. 


The newly built green roof shed waits for visitors.

Visitors on the right go inside the shed to view a slide show that documents the construction of the shed by the Cornell Gardeners. The folks on the left are viewing the Weed Garden.
