A PLACE TO KEEP IN TOUCH WITH CORNELL VOLUNTEER GARDENERS ACTIVITIES, SPECIAL PROJECTS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS.
CORNELL GARDENERS WELCOMED OVER 250 VISITORS TO CORNELL HORTICULTURAL RESEARCH CENTER (LIREC) OPEN HOUSE ON SOUND AVE IN RIVERHEAD NY. The day began at 7:45 am as Mark open the doors and a team of Cornell Gardener volunteers started to set up for the full day of activities. After months of preperation the day was here.Vince had the most important job of getting the coffee & bagels ready while the volunteers started gathering tables, chairs, signs, handouts, plants,a tractor and all the props necessary to welcome our guests, while chanting no rain no rain. The signs were up, the gardens looked vibrant, Remani, Millie, Dee and Ellie were ready to greet the guests and direct them to the scheduled events. Susan, Nahem and Frieda had the trailer full of home grown plants ready, Sharon & Linda had the kids corner set up under the big oak tree by the entrance to the main gardens, while Tony & Jerry set up a gallery of photos depecting flowers from the gardens. The sign in sheet for the wagon tour of the 60 acre lab was filling up quickly, Margret, Anita C & Anita B were ready to give guided tours of the "L" gardens, Tom was ready to answer questions about our tool shed with the Living green roof and hand out a questionaire to rate the over 200 trial plants, and John had his demonstration tables set to teach how to turn a large leaf into a cement bird feeder. Inside Jay was ready to give his power point presentaion, Garden Clean up-No vacuum Required, as Dan Gilrein(Cornell Entamologist) displayed his morning catch of bugs from the garden to educate the kids. Reports of rain were turning into reality, by 11am the black rain cloud was visible in the southern sky moving our way and the rain drops began to water the plants and the crowd, quickly moving everyone into the lab for cover. While inside the chit chat quickly turned to plants, some folks from Texas asked Dr. Bridgen, Director of the Lab, how do i get rid of poison oak? Move to Long Island was the answer, because we have no poison oak! That was an easy one! Well the rain was off and on for the next 4 hours as we all made the best of it. One guest who worked at the Research Lab back in 1960, remarked that the lab back then had no main building, only a single family house with potato fields, no floriculture research was being done at all. Now there is a large building, where research is being done on Vegetables & Potatoes, Green House & Floricultuer,Nursery & Turf as well as Viticulture. New research disciplines on the horizon include vegetable Pathology, weed science and Entomology. The Volunteer Cornell Gardeners tend their beautiful gardens, and learn about and teach gardening.
