WELCOME TO CORNELL VOLUNTEER GARDENERS GARDENS...
CORNELL VOLUNTEER GARDENERS MAINTAIN GARDENS AT CORNELL UNIVERSITY'S LONG ISLAND HORTICULTURAL RESEARCH CENTER (LIREC). WE MEET EVERY TUESDAY FROM 9 AM TO 12 NOON. THE LAB IS LOCATED at 3059 SOUND AVE IN RIVERHEAD, NEW YORK. CORNELL GARDENERS WELCOME VOLUNTEER GARDENERS TO JOIN THEM, YOU CAN ATTEND ONE OF THEIR MEETINGS EVERY TUESDAY AT 9 AM. THIS VIEW IS SECTION ONE OF THE "L GARDENS". THE WOOD CHIP PATH, STARTS IN THE EAST AND MEANDERS WEST THROUGH THE EVERGEEN GARDEN AND THEN THE PATH GOES SOUTH ENDING AT THE COMPOST BINS.
THE CRIPTOMERIA IS LOCATED IN THE CENTER OF THE "L" GARDEN AND CREATES A FOCAL POINT AND RESTING PLACE WITH A BENCH AT THE BOTTOM LEFT. EILEEN TENDS THIS AREA.
TO THE RIGHT OF THE CRIPTOMARIA THE L GARDEN RUNS SOUTH ENDING AT THE COMPOST BIN. NOTICE THE 10 FOOT TALL DEER FENCING THAT ENCLOSES THE ENTIRE 60 ACRE SITE.
THE ENTRANCE TO THE LIHREC SHOWS THREE SECTIONS OF THE SOUTH BLOOM GARDEN, BARBARA AND DEE TEND THE SOUTH BLOOM GARDENS.
BARBARA AND DEE TEND THE SOUTH BLOOM GARDENS, WITH HELP FROM OTHER CORNELL GARDENERS.TO THE LEFT (EAST) OF SOUTH BLOOM GARDEN(NOT PICTURED) IS THE SEAGRANT GARDENS WHICH SURROUNDS THE SEAGRANTRESEARCH BUILDING, NORM AND REMANI ARE THE PRIMARY GARDENERS.
TO THE RIGHT OF THE LABS MAIN ENTRANCE BEHIND BARBARAS GARDEN IS VICTOR'S GARDEN WHICH LEADS THE WAY TO THE MAIN GARDENS, THAT FRONT SOUND AVE.
THE DAHLIA GARDEN IN BLOOM, IS ABOUT 5 FEET WIDE AND ABOUT 200 FEET LONG, AND RUNS PARALLEL TO THE "L" GARDEN.
Jim, Bill and Vince are the Primary Gardeners of the Dahlia gardens.

As you enter CORNELL UNIVERSITY'S LONG ISLAND HORTICULTURAL RESEARCH CENTER (LIHREC) from Sound Ave, LIHRC main building is on your right(west) and is fronted by the South Bloom Gardens, that has three separate garden sections. Barbara and Dee are the primary gardeners. (see photo above)
Directly east(on your left) as you enter LIHREC is the Seagrant Building which is fronted by the Seagrant Gardens Remani and Norman are the primary gardeners of the Seagrant Gardens.
The North Bloom garden is located norht of LIHRC main building and Vic is the primary gardener. The north bloom garden is the gateway to the L Garden and LIHREC main Display Gardens.
The L Garden is the main garden and is pictured above. The L garden gets it's name from it's shape that resembles a big L.The L Garden is made up of 5 theme gardens.The first theme garden is the Herb garden which is located at the entrance of the L Garden located on the north east corner of the Cornell's display gardens. Bonnie ,Jane and Liz are the primary gardeners for the herb garden.
As you follow the wood chip path from the herb garden going west you arrive at the Arbor,and can take a deep breath before going on to the Fragrance garden where you will meet Ellie who is the primary gardener.
Continue on the wood chip path, where you will meet Ken who is the primary gardener for the Bulb garden.
Continue on the path to the Evergreen garden where you will meet Eileen who is the primary gardener of the Evergreen gardens.
Follow the path south to the Butterfly garden and you will meet Nancy who is the primary gardener of the Butterfly gardens.
Continue on the path to the Cottage garden where you will meet Margaret and Susan who are the primary gardeners of the Cottage Garden,
The L garden ends just south of the cottage garden where a dual bin compost area is located.
Fron the compost bins you go north east to the Dahlia Garden where you will meet Jim, Bill and Vince who are the primary gardeners of the Dahlia garden(pictured above).
The Cornell Volunteer Gardeners are a public organization and have various mission and goals.The purpose of the Cornell Gardeners as per their Charrter, is to provide a means for individuals who are interested and passionaste about gardening to:extend their knowlege of, and interest in, gardening and related topics. Share knowlege and expertise, and offer help and assistance to the public through gardening and horticultural programs. Support the researech and extension programs of LIHREC. Assist with the planning and maintenance of the Cornell University gardens.
The Cornell Gardeners meet at LIHREC and are comprised of volunteer members. Their Executive Board is comprised of a President, V.P.,Secratary,Treasurer and Garden director who are responsable to manage the Cornell Gardeners. LIHREC is represented on the Executive Board by the Director of the LIHREC. The director will advise, assist and organize activities of the organization. The director will insure the organizations missions and goals are forht right and conform with the missions and goals of LIHREC.
The Garden Director, with input from the membership and the Primary Gardeners, shall organize garden design and activities of the LIHREC Herbacous gardens.The director will organize the planning, planting and maintenance for the year.It is acceptable that different gardeners utilize the Garden Director’s skills in different ways. But, overall the Director should make sure the individual gardens maintain some order, have things blooming all during the year, be organized and that there are plans for the growing season.
The Primary Gardeners, have an ongoing relationship with the Garden Director. Primary gardeners make a so called Garden List for the garden director, of what they need for their gardens, including and not limited to updating their garden design, creating new structure, moving exsistng plants,dividing and planting new plants,starting seeds, compost, mulching,weeding, pruning,insect controll,watering,and labor assitance are some of the past topics for the garden list.
